How can I redesign an old ring?

Dear Fox,

I have inherited some super sentimental diamond rings from my grandmother, and while I love them because she wore them, I could never wear them. Can I redesign them into a new custom diamond ring?

remaking inherited rings into new custom jewelry

Dear Sally,

It's a very special opportunity to be able to wear your grandmother's diamonds! I understand about being nervous, and we have helped hundreds design jewelry around special diamonds and gemstones. Here's something else to consider: we can make the ring using gold from your grandmother or anyone special to you, even if you want a different color metal (for example, the jewelry is yellow gold and you want white gold). If you have extra gold to trade in, we'll give you a 30% bonus! We also purchase diamonds. Trading in gold and diamonds.

We design jewelry using computer modeling, which gives a much superior result than traditional wax carving. This allows you to see a rendering of your custom ring and make changes before it's made. It's all done on premises, and your grandmother’s diamonds will be photographed, described and insured upon takein. Custom Jewelry Gallery

All of our jewelry is made by or under the guidance of our owner, George Fox. He's a Certified Gemologist and a Master Jeweler who has been making jewelry since he was 16 years old.

When you come in, we'll start by trying on rings. That helps determine the ring style you like on your hand. Looking at pictures in advance is good, but there’s nothing like trying on a lot of different diamond rings!

Old diamond ring mountingsWe'll measure your diamonds and talk about designs that work well with them. We recommend that you are open to adding more diamonds to your custom ring. Also consider using only some of your grandmother's diamonds. If she has given you jewelry with many diamonds or odd diamond sizes and you try to use them all, the design may not be one that you love. You can keep them for another custom design!

After we have selected a style or feel, we'll draw it out for you. This initial meeting usually lasts about 1 - 2 hours.

If you are ready to proceed, we'll begin the computer design. This is the point that we ask for a deposit. When we have completed the design, we'll email you renderings with different views of your ring. If you love it, or want to make a very small change, great! Simply respond by email. If there are any larger changes, it's best to come in. You'll schedule an appointment with George and the two of you will work together on the model, until it's exactly how you want it.

We take it from there--cutting your wax on our mill, putting the wax in a flask with a special plaster, melting out the wax to get an exact negative of your ring, melting the metal and shooting it into the mold. The finishing stages are cleaning the rough casting, prepolishing the casting, setting the diamonds, final polishing and inspection. It's a lot of steps, but it gives great results and you get a custom ring, made just for you, using your own special diamonds and metal!

The process takes about 6 - 8 weeks, and you can come in anytime – no appointment is needed.

Thank you for your inquiry and we look forward to working with you!
