If your birthday is in October, you have two options of birthstones: opal and tourmaline. While most people only have one birthstone, you get to pick!
Opals are beautiful stones and typically show multicolored flashes in the light. They are usually white or blue, but also come in black and bright orange, red, and yellow (called Fire Opal). Mined all over the world, opals can be found in the western United States, Honduras, Mexico, and Brazil, however, 95% of opals are found in Australia! Traditionally, opals are known to be a symbol of good luck, happiness, loyalty, and confidence, and it is said that their properties can help prevent eye diseases. While each opal is beautifully unique and durable, it is recommended for earrings, necklaces, and occasional rings, but not for everyday rings.
Tourmaline is typically green, pink, and black, but can be found more rarely in light blue and aqua shades. It’s incredibly unique because multiple colors can show in the same stone, referred to as watermelon tourmaline (pink in the center and green on the outside) and bicolor tourmaline (pink to green). It’s mined in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Burma, Sri Lanka, and the United States. In fact, there are tourmaline mines just a few hours away from Ventura in Temecula, California! Although it’s slightly harder than opal, tourmaline is still recommended for occasional rings (not everyday), earrings, and necklaces.
