Robert's Story
Robert Wassell, born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania in 1951, began his artistic journey with private art lessons during his teenage years under the mentorship of renowned watercolor painter Alice Welsh Jenkins. His formal education in the arts includes studies at Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
Since moving to California in 1985, Wassell has been captivated by the natural beauty of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. An avid hiker, he ventures into the local mountains weekly, drawing inspiration from the untamed landscapes that he explores in solitude.
With a career spanning over 30 years, his work has been showcased in galleries across both coasts, earning him recognition for his distinctive style.
Robert's Art
Wassell’s paintings are a vivid tribute to the raw, untouched wilderness of California's backcountry. Known for his unique blend of “Representational Expressionism,” he captures the essence of remote landscapes, often hiking for hours or even days to find the perfect vantage point. His work emphasizes natural beauty in its purest form, with only the faintest trace of human influence—perhaps a dirt trail or road.
Using sketches made during his hikes, Wassell later brings these scenes to life on canvas, favoring the strong light and shadows of early mornings or late afternoons. Through his use of bold brushwork and dynamic color, Wassell invites viewers to not just see, but feel the serenity and power of the landscapes he portrays.
You can view Robert Wassell's stunning work at Fox Fine Jewelry from April 10th until July 5th. Join us for his reception on April 12th.
