Rose gold jewelry on money

Should I sell my jewelry?

Pre-owned jewelry prices are significantly lower than new jewelry. Therefore, consider selling your jewelry if:

  • You don’t like the style
  • It’s associated with unpleasant memories
  • You prefer to have the money

Another alternative is to reset your diamonds and gemstones into new jewelry! Get a 30% bonus for the metal to use towards the cost of your new piece.

  • OPTION 1:

    Sell to private party

    • Usually nets a higher price
    • Requires time and effort
    • Often difficult to find a buyer
    • Best for current styles in new condition, large natural diamonds, or select brands

  • OPTION 2:

Friends and Family

Tell your friends and family and you just might connect with someone! This is the best option to get the highest price. If you want guidance on setting a fair price, consider having a verbal consultation at Fox Fine Jewelry if you’re local to our store in Ventura, CA.

Sell Online Yourself

List your jewelry on Facebook Marketplace, CraigsList or Ebay, and post on social media. The costs is little or nothing. Expect to get a similar amount to selling to a jeweler, but for popular pieces, you may get a bit more.

For your security, we recommend meeting in an indoor public place.

OPTION 2:

Consign to Local Jeweler

The jewelry style is an extremely important factor in the selling price and how quickly it sells. Consignment is best when:

  • The jewelry style is at either end of the spectrum: recently purchased, or antique (especially 1920's and earlier)
  • The jewelry has a high value
  • The jewelry is in good or new condition
  • There is no need for immediate payment

Choose a busy, successful jeweler. Otherwise, you may lose months or years waiting for your jewelry to sell, and it may not sell at all.

Every jeweler has different consignment policies, so inquire to learn more.

OPTION 3:

Consign to Online Reseller

Online consignment options often net a similar amount to selling to a jeweler, plus you don’t get immediate payment. After paying the company’s commission, you’ll often net only the value of the metal, diamonds and gems. But in some cases you’ll get more, especially if the piece is a current style in new condition.

Examples of online consignors are: louped, worthy, 1stdibs.com, and therealreal. Fox Fine Jewelry recommends you research their contracts and fees, and read their reviews before shipping your jewelry to them.

OPTION 4:

Sell to jeweler, pawn, or gold store

The easy way to get immediate payment, typically a similar amount to an online reseller.

In most cases you’ll receive the value of the metal and stones - sometimes a bit more. Small, scratched stones have little value.

Jewelry Store

Best if your jewelry has diamonds or gemstones. For large diamonds or gemstones, visit a jeweler that specializes in custom design, like Fox Fine Jewelry.

Custom jewelers often pay a premium for stones to use in future creations. Other jewelers will sell your stones on the wholesale market; thus you'll get less.

Pawn Shop

Pawn shops are usually best for pawning and not selling. There’s one small exception: if you have a well worn ring in an older style, there is a possibility that a pawn shop would sell it, even in its worn condition. But even in these cases, the offer isn't usually much more than a jeweler's.

We Buy Gold

If your jewelry is in good condition or has diamonds or gemstones, do not go to a We Buy Gold business! Most will remove the diamonds and gems and purchase the gold only. Take it to a busy jeweler that sells similar jewelry styles.

What jewelry sells for more?

Most jewelry people sell shows wear or is an outdated style. These pieces are sold for the intrinsic value (metal, diamonds and gems), and are disassembled.

If your jewelry is in good condition, and is either a current style or an antique, you may get a higher amount. Premiums are sometimes paid for top tier brands such as Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels or Cartier.

What stones sell for more?

Diamonds:

Natural round diamonds are the most popular and valuable, followed by ovals and cushions. Expect less for marquise and princess cuts.

Large natural round diamonds of a good quality are easier to sell privately than the vast majority of other jewelry.

Lab diamonds have little resale value.

Gemstones:

It’s common for gemstones to be chipped or scratched from wear. This reduces the selling price by the recutting cost. Often this cost exceeds the value of the gem.

  • Highest value: Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and alexandrites.
  • Medium value: Tanzanites, opals, aquamarine, and tourmaline

Most other gemstones have little or no value.
