What a Custom Engagement Ring Isn't

Most rings billed as “custom engagement rings” are just two parts: a center diamond and a ring mounting. A ring mounting is an engagement ring that’s already completed, except for the center diamond. These rings are typically manufactured in large batches of the same ring style.

You’ll see it called “custom” or “design your ring” because you are choosing two things - the diamond and the ring.

At Fox Fine Jewelry, we don’t call that custom!

Then what is a Custom Engagement Ring?

A custom engagement ring is designed by you, in collaboration with a jewelry designer. Fox Fine Jewelry makes all of our jewelry in our onsite workshop. We’ve made thousands of custom engagement rings; each one unique.

Your custom engagement ring will be made for you, exactly as you want it. You can add in details so your ring is personal and different from all others. That’s the beauty of custom design. It speaks directly to your relationship, and will be a unique reflection of your love. And the design process is exciting!

Designing your Custom Engagement Ring

You’ll start with a complimentary custom design consultation, either in person or remote. We’ll ask you questions and give you our experience and advice. Once your design is finalized, we’ll make a 3-D computer model so you can see your custom engagement ring and make any changes before it’s made.

Crafting your Custom Engagement Ring

We begin with pure recycled gold or platinum, mix our proprietary metal alloy, and cast your ring onsite. It’s extremely rare that a jeweler does their own casting, but we are sticklers for high quality, so we do our own casting.

Next we prefinish your ring by polishing the insides of your ring. This is an extra step that typically is skipped, but polishing the inner crevices of your ring creates a reflective surface under and around your diamonds, making them shine much brighter!

Next the diamonds are set by highly trained and experienced jewelers, and all work is done under microscope. Then we apply any special finishes or details.

Lastly, your custom engagement ring goes through three separate quality control checks. We want to be sure that anything that leaves Fox Fine Jewelry is perfect!

  • A complimentary consultation with one of our certified custom jewelry design specialists.
  • Your engagement ring is modeled in 3D. Computer images are emailed to you, allowing you to make changes to the design.
  • Your engagement ring is cast, diamonds are set, and finishes are applied.
  • Your custom engagement ring is ready!

Typical prices for a custom engagement ring, apart from the center diamond:

  • Few number of stones and a thinner band: $700 - $2,000
  • Medium number of stones, more intricate designs (most rings)   $2,000 - $4,000
  • Many stones and a wider band: $4,000 and up

The center diamond is additional. These are general guidelines only; contact us for more information.

In certain cases it is cheaper to customize an engagement ring than buying a ready made new one. It may be cheaper in the following cases:

  • If you have your own diamonds to repurpose, then it may be cheaper to make a custom engagement ring instead of buying a ready made one.
  • If you use your center diamond in a ready made ring, it will usually be cheaper. In some cases the crown (the part that holds your center diamond) must be modified to match the size and shape of your diamond.

The time needed to make a custom engagement ring depends on circumstances:

  • If we are modifying your existing engagement ring - for example adding or removing diamonds, or changing your center diamond, it will usually take 1 - 3 weeks.
  • If we are making your custom engagement ring entirely, it usually takes 8 weeks, although we can rush your ring and usually have it done within 2 weeks of approval!

We will make one for you! The rings you see were made for a specific person and are not in stock. If the custom engagement ring has a unique gemstone, we’re confident that we can supply one that you love, but it won’t be exactly the same.

Yes you can! You can repurpose your diamonds into a completely different ring. Or, for many rings, we can modify your existing engagement ring. For example, it may be possible to add or remove diamonds, replace them with gemstones, or add on a custom made band to give you a whole new look.
